Half your abandoned carts are one unanswered question

A tipped shopping cart with a question mark tumbling toward a speech bubble

Baymard's running meta-analysis of checkout studies puts the average cart abandonment rate at just over 70 percent. Ask those shoppers why, and the top answer has not changed in a decade: extra costs they didn't see coming. Shipping, taxes, fees, revealed on the final screen. About 48 percent of abandonments trace back to it.

Read that as a pricing problem and you'll start offering free shipping you can't afford. Read it as an information problem and the fix is much cheaper: the shopper had a question, and the only way to get it answered was to go through checkout.

The questions people don't email you about

Look at what's actually going through a shopper's head on a product page. Do you ship to me? What will it cost? When will it arrive? Can I return it if the fit is wrong? Is this the right size, the right cable, the right version for my machine?

Almost none of these become support tickets. A ticket takes effort and a wait. Checkout is faster, so the shopper uses it as a question-answering tool, gets the number, and leaves. Your abandonment rate is partly a measure of how many questions your pages leave open.

Answer on the page, not at the register

The obvious fix is to put shipping information on the product page, and you should. But you can't anticipate every combination of destination, weight, and promotion in static copy, and shoppers don't read the FAQ anyway. What works is an agent on the page that answers the specific question from your actual shipping policy, cited, in one exchange: 'Delivery to Portugal is 6.90, three to five days, free over 60.'

The same agent handles the sizing question by reading your size guide and the compatibility question by reading the product spec. On a Shopify store it can check stock and add the item to the cart from inside the conversation, so the answer and the action are one step, not a detour.

Measure it properly

Don't judge this by 'did abandonment fall overall'. Judge it by the questions asked. After a couple of weeks you'll have a ranked list of what shoppers wanted to know before buying, which is customer research you'd otherwise pay for. Shipping to a country you don't serve, sizing on one product line, a compatibility question nobody thought to document: each one is either a page to write or a decision to make.

Then fix the top three in your content. The agent's answers get better on the next crawl, and so does the page for everyone who never opens the chat.
