"Where is my order?" is 40% of your tickets. Here's how to make it zero.

Industry surveys keep landing on the same number: 'where is my order?' questions make up 20 to 40 percent of ecommerce support volume, and more than half of it in peak season. Every one of those tickets follows the same script. Find the order. Open the carrier page. Paste the status back. Close. Repeat.
It's the worst kind of work: high volume, zero judgement, and it makes the customer wait for information that already exists in two systems they can't see. Nobody on your team got better at their job by answering it. Nobody on your team is going to stop answering it either, unless you change where the question lands.
Why the tracking page doesn't fix it
Most stores already have a tracking link in the shipping email. The tickets still come. That's because the customer isn't really asking for a tracking number. They're asking 'will it be here by Friday?', 'it says delivered but I don't have it', or 'I ordered two things and only one shipped'. A tracking page answers none of those. A person does, which is why the email gets sent.
The tell is in your own inbox: how many WISMO tickets open with the customer already pasting the tracking number? They've seen the page. They want an interpretation of it.
Let the customer ask the order directly
The fix is an agent on your site that can do what your support rep does, before the ticket exists. The visitor types 'where's my order', the agent asks for the email or order number, looks it up in Shopify, and answers in plain language: what shipped, what didn't, the carrier status, and the delivery estimate. When the answer is 'it's marked delivered but you don't have it', the agent should know to hand off, because that one really does need a human.
Two things make this safe rather than scary. The agent only reads order data after the visitor identifies themselves, and it only says things it can source: the order record for status, your shipping policy page for the 'what if it's late' part, with a citation on grounded answers so the customer can check. No improvising delivery promises.
What changes the week after
Stores that route WISMO to an agent usually see the ticket category drop to a handful of genuine exceptions: lost parcels, wrong addresses, split shipments gone sideways. Those get an escalation rule, a notification in Slack or Telegram, and a human who now has time to actually care about them.
The second effect is quieter. Every unanswered question the agent logs is a gap in your content. If people keep asking whether you ship to Ireland, that's a page you're missing, and the next crawl picks it up once you write it. The support queue turns into a to-do list for your website.
