Should your AI sales agent hand out discount codes?

A price tag with a percent sign crossed out next to a dark price tag with a tick

Usually, no. An AI sales agent that offers a code to anyone who hesitates teaches your shoppers to hesitate, and it gives away margin on orders that would have happened anyway. Hesitation often comes from an unanswered question about cost or delivery. Answer that question and keep discounts for offers you've chosen on purpose.

Discounts change what shoppers think the price is

Shoppers carry a sense of what a product should cost, and discounts move it. A 2021 study by Sheinin and Della Bitta in the Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice found that excessive discounting can lower that internal reference price, and frequent deep discounts lower it most.

The same study found that premiums worth the same as a discount, such as a free gift, kept the reference price where it was, even when offered often. So a free gift protects your price better than the same amount taken off.

A chat agent that discounts on request discounts as often as shoppers ask, and we'd expect a shopper who learns that asking works to ask again.

What hesitating shoppers usually need

Look at why people leave. In Baymard Institute's research on US online shoppers, leaving aside those who were just browsing, 40% said they abandoned a checkout because extra costs were too high. That was the most cited reason, ahead of slow delivery and not trusting the site. What fixes that is telling them the shipping cost and the free-shipping line before they reach checkout.

In chat the pattern is similar. "Is there a discount?" is often a polite way of asking "is this worth it?" or "what will it cost me in total?". Answer the fit and the total cost, and you've answered the question behind it.

How Agentmatica handles discount requests

Agentmatica doesn't create or apply discount codes. It sells on fit: it answers the question, shows the product that suits, and mentions your free-shipping line if your Sales notes or pages give it.

When you do want an offer in the chat, write it in your Sales notes, for example "First-time buyers who ask can use WELCOME10 at checkout". The agent mentions it when it fits, and the shopper enters the code at checkout as usual. For one conversation, you can send the agent a private note authorizing an offer for that shopper.

The agent is instructed not to offer discounts you haven't authorized. When a shopper names a budget and starts haggling, the agent alerts your team so a person can decide. You can read the conversations in your dashboard.

When a discount does make sense

A welcome offer you already run, a seasonal sale, a clearance line or a reward for a big order can all go in the chat, because they're your decisions applied the same way to everyone. If you want an incentive at checkout itself, a free gift over a threshold keeps the reference price intact. Our sister app Smart Checkout Widgets does that on Shopify.

Write down which offers exist this month, put the ones you're happy to share in your Sales notes, and take the rest out when the sale ends.

Questions store owners ask

Should an AI chatbot give customers discount codes?

Only for offers you've chosen to run, such as a welcome code or a seasonal sale. Handing out codes on request trains shoppers to ask, and research links frequent deep discounting to lower price expectations. Answering the question behind the hesitation usually works better.

Can Agentmatica create discount codes?

No. Agentmatica doesn't create or apply discount codes. It can tell shoppers about an offer you've written in your Sales notes or authorized in a private note, and the shopper applies the code at checkout.

What should I offer instead of a discount?

Answer what the shopper is unsure about, which is usually the fit or the total cost. If you want an incentive, a free gift of equal value protects your price better than a percentage off.
