How to raise average order value without another popup

A shopping bag next to a small box, with a black plus sign between them and a speech bubble

Most advice on average order value ends in a widget: a frequently-bought-together strip, a cart drawer upsell, a spin-to-win that turns into a discount. Some of those work. They share one weakness, which is that they guess. The widget knows what's in the cart. It has no idea why.

Someone buying a coffee grinder as a gift wants different add-ons from someone replacing a broken one. The gift buyer might happily take a bag of beans and a gift note. The replacement buyer already owns everything and reads the suggestion as noise.

The add-on that gets accepted answers a question

The suggestions shoppers take are usually the ones they were about to ask about. Do I need a filter for this? Will this cable work with my laptop? Is there a case that fits? When the add-on is the answer to their question, it doesn't read as selling.

So timing matters more than placement. A shopper asking about compatibility is a far better moment to mention the adapter than a popup on page load, because they've just told you what they're worried about.

Use your free-shipping line

If you have a free-shipping threshold, it may already be your best order-value tool. Shoppers a few pounds short will often add something to clear it, and they'd rather be told what than go hunting. A progress bar in the cart helps. A sentence that names something that makes sense with their order helps more: "Add the 250g sampler and shipping's free."

Setting this up in Agentmatica

Write your rules in Sales notes, in plain sentences: what goes with what, where your free-shipping line sits, anything it should never push. The agent uses them whenever a shopper asks for advice.

On a connected Shopify or WooCommerce store you can also turn on the product-page suggestion. The agent picks one complementary item from your catalog, following your pairing rules if you've written them, and offers it once per conversation. If the chat is closed it shows as a small bubble beside the launcher. It's off by default, and that's the right default. Turn it on, read a week of conversations, and check whether the suggestions make sense for your catalog.

On Growth plans the chat can also open a few seconds after a cart add with a relevant suggestion, or when a shopper lingers on checkout without moving on.

Leave the checkout offers at checkout

Some order-value work belongs in checkout itself, like a free gift over a threshold or an upsell block on the checkout page. Those sit fine alongside a conversation. On Shopify, our sister app Smart Checkout Widgets handles that side.

How to tell whether it's working

Don't take a single revenue number from any tool at face value, ours included. Read the conversations where the agent suggested something and ask two things: did the shopper take it, and did the suggestion make sense? Then watch items per order over a few weeks.

If shoppers keep ignoring a suggestion, the pairing is probably wrong, and you can change it in Sales notes in a minute.

Suggest the add-on when it answers a question

Agentmatica recommends from your catalog, follows your pairing rules, and on Shopify and WooCommerce adds the item to the cart inside the chat. Free plan, one script tag.
